Cat converter is arguably 'part of' the engine design.
Besides, the turbocharger is another component that can overheat the oil. Only a small amount of oil goes thru the turbo. But that oil will be 'damaged' by the high temperature & eventually build up the sludge.
The owners manual calls for semi-synthetic oil & change every 10,000 miles. Most of us around here know to use full-synthetic oil & change more often than that. That's a BIG difference for sludge formation.
