I've been trying to pinpoint the cause of a rough (and occasionally surging) idle during the first couple of minutes after a cold start. It seems to be a problem with the open-loop phase of operation, before the O2 sensors kick in and it becomes closed-loop, as the car runs perfectly once the temperature gauge begins to rise. I've already eliminated several of the usual suspects and am working my way down the list.
I've read that one possible cause could be the NTC coolant temp sensor (NOT the one for the temp gauge sender next to the thermostat!) that lets the ECU know if it needs to alter the mixture for a cold start. If it goes bad, the ECU is supposed to assume a default temperature, which one source gives as 26 C (79 F), and a cold start is almost always much lower than that. I know that this is a cheap part, but I've also read that people have been able to test it by checking the resistance when cold versus warm. Only problem is, I can't find the bloody thing!
Most people seem to say it's on the back (firewall) side of the head, either underneath or 'inside' the intake manifold, and more toward cylinders 3 & 4. They also say it's a very hard location to reach, but at this point I'll settle for just being able to get my eyes on it! I looked at WIS for a '99 (I haven't been able to obtain WIS for later years) and it does show the sensor in a similar location, but it's not surprising that T7 might be different.
Anyone have any advice on finding this sensor, much less replacing it?
