replaced antenna, now...motor very noisy when going up

Replaced the antenna mast with all of the typical problems getting the antenna out. I had to take the entire assembly apart to get the broken plastic tape out. As luck would have it I would have had to take it apart to get the antenna out anyway. I used the hammer and vice grip method which got the antenna out but left the sleeve and the piece on the end of the antenna still inside. I ended up using a long hex wrench to pound the offending pieces out of the tube.
And now...after reassembling the motor and getting the antenna mast installed (with just a little bit of persuasion) the motor is quite noisy when the antenna is extending. It seems to move smoothly up and it is working just fine going down.
When if took the motor apart there was a ton of grease inside. Is this a case of needing to clean it up and put in some more grease? It is strange that the motor is working fine when it retracts the antenna but noisy going up...Any thoughts anyone has would as always be appreciated.
