The only hitch is that the large nut that holds it on the top side is likely to be too rusted to remove. The bottom one will either come off or the shaft will snap. Either way it comes off. Definitely a DIY job if you can deal with the rusted nut. I used a dremel and sliced it in two with a fiberglass cutting wheel.
If it's truly broken, I could imagine it causing a thunk. Just a torn boot would not be a source of noise.
I think lower control arms are advanced DIY. You need some skills. Not exotic ones, but some.
FYI - if you intend to do the end links, I'd order from eeuroparts.com at $25 each. I did not order them when I did my control arms (bad advice that they'd be reusable). I ended up having to buy locally in a hurry. The dealer was $68/side. The only parts store that could get them the same day was $55/side.
