It usually means that it start to get low on freon. The lesser amount of charge makes noise when passing through the expansion valve.
If you would have an external leak that made a hissing noise, the freon would leak out so quickly that the A/C would stop working right away.
At some point and time, the expansion valve goes bad so if some problems shows up and the system is emptied. It is not a bad idea to replace it.
If the compressor needs to be replace at some point, the valve and receiver/drier should be replaced too.
