A friend and I just removed a Viggen engine and we took it out the top. We did not have to touch the subframe. We removed all ancillaries as well as the rad, hood and front bumper (makes for much easier access).
We lifted the engine slightly with an engine crane, removed all motor mounts, undid the large driveshaft nut at the wheel (to do this we used a floor jack to raise the front under the center of the front cross member. We left the car on the jack and the wheels off), pulled out the drive shafts by shifting the engine/trans a bit from side to side and separated the transmission from the engine. To lift the engine over the front of the body of the car we lowered the floor jack and wheeled the crane with engine out.
The transmission was lifted out by hand.
I've read all the posts and spoke to mechanics before we did this and we were ready to drop the subframe but now I'm not sure why one would have to bother???
