99 9-3. My temperature gauge was reading very cold, then normal, then back again rapidly. I was sure this was the sensor/sender at first, but then it started giving me readings in between. I convinced myself it was the thermostat, but replacing it didn't make a difference.
It was definitely the temp sender, which is just to the front from the thermostat housing on the right side of the LHD engine.
I found it surprisingly difficult to replace, mainly because of all the hoses and pipes in the area. I cut off the wires on the old unit and used a 19mm socket. For the new unit, a stubby 19mm wrench would have been very helpful. My wrench which was almost 12'' long was really a pain. Also, it was difficult to get things started because the wires would twist and unscrew the sender until I got enough resistance on the threads.
I drained the coolant as many here recommend, by snaking a small tube into the hose that connects the coolant reservoir to the engine.
