2001 Viggen engine replaced!!! Posted by Viggen Aero [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Thanks to all of you who answered many of my questions in previous posts. Well after two years of sitting in my garage, I replaced my blown B235R with a low mileage engine! No SAAB manuals were used or even looked at. Though they were available. All options were considered. But the easiest way was to jack the front of the car up as high as possible, drop the subframe and lower the engine with a cherry picker onto a dolly ( or in this case and old creeper). Had to remove the cooling fan, but not radiator, fender liners, and lower cladding under radiator . Turbo was removed before lowering engine. Turbo nuts and all exhaust nuts came off easily- I was very surprised at that. After removing the caliper and dust shield, it rolled right out of the car under the wheel well. It took about 20 hours total and not too much aggravation. Nothing broken, lost ( OK a few things misplaced for a while). Almost all bolts and nuts were put back where they were removed from to make it easier to reassemble. The smaller ones were put into labeled baggies. The car is running beautifully. The engine came really stripped. Had to swap everything over. Replaced entire clutch assembly, all new hoses, belt, pulleys, seals, (including rear main and oil pump), O-rings, gaskets, T-stat, etc. After replacing a few key fuses I had previously robbed for another SAAB, It started right up, no check engine lights. and no runnability issues, and only two minor fluid leaks- which were easily fixed. I've been proudly driving it since Monday. The only thing that didn't work was the key remote ( built into key). And my friend who helped- an incredible auto technician was able to bleed the clutch successfully the fist time in 20 minutes. I was scared at first because the lifters were very noisy. But that stopped after 30 minutes running time.
It's not something I'd like to do again soon. But it was not as daunting as I anticipated.
thanks for all of your help!
