I have a 2000 se with auto. I was going in the direction of the stick originally but had to weigh in the local traffic ( most of the time 1 hr stop and go then another 30 minutes highway). I talked to an indie I have known and trust about the automatic and his opinion is that they are very reliable. I bought the car used with 133000 on the od. The next day the trans started to shift funny then I lost reverse. As a last resort before replacing the trans I drained the fluid and it was brown, I could not tell the color on the dipstick when I checked it.I filled it with 1 quart of rislone tranny fix and the rest walmart trans fluid.I gained function of reverse. drove the car for a day then proceeded to drain and change the fluid 4 times. I now run straight trans fluid for the last 30000 and it works great (got lucky or my friend was right about the reliability). The sport mode on these trannys is fantastic, it is a lot of fun.
The key is if you buy the auto, either check the service records or drain the trans fluid.
Good Luck.
