I had been chasing a leaky front axle seal (replaced once already under warranty), and when we had it up on a lift, my (highly recommended by this list and experienced) indy uttered words one never wants to hear - "Uh-oh, that's not good". We looked at the driver's side axle which had a fair amount of play in it right where it entered the tranny and he explained there's not much we can do... Today after thinking about it for a day I asked for a lay person's explanation of what's going on. He offered this: "The bearing that supports the stub of the axle where it enters the transmission and engages the final drive (ring and pinion) has failed, so it is not rotating on the correct axis." And he offered me a couple of replacement options.

I know I am looking at eventual replacement (ka-ching!), but I wanted to ask the board's collective wisdom on a couple of things:

1). First is safety. Is failure usually catastrophic or will it be well communicated by increased noise, rubbing, etc.? The car drives and shifts perfectly. There is a little clunking over bumps that I always that was a bad strut mount or something..., and

2). Whether you'd drop the two grand (including a new clutch and slave) on a ten year old car with 137K - second owner and every indication of good maintenance, no rust.
