Tire noise vs brand

One of the less enjoyable features of our 2002 9-3 SE is a lot of wind and road noise. In my attempts to reduce the latter, I made some tire modifications.
Tire Rack does not specifically recommend Goodyear Assurance ComforTred tires for the SE, but I purchased a set of 205-55 x 16" (same size as the original tires. These tires are promoted for their comfortable ride and low noise, while sacrificing a little performance. During their life I never found them to be lacking in any normal performance characteristic.
The tires started out both quiet and comfortable. After 25K miles of use they had become quite noisy, but the comfort was still good. After 50K miles they were extremely noisy, and the poor isolation of road noise in the 2002 SE exacerbated this. Although I probably still had about 5K of treadlife remaining, I swapped out the tires for a new set of the same brand.
This time, however, after 25K miles of use I will put them on my wife's Avalon (which has excellent road noise insulation) and install a fresh set of ComforTreds on the Saab.
The real point of this post is to demonstrate that noise ratings on any tire don't mean very much after the tire starts to wear down.
