I'm curious how they determined the problem since you can only see the back of the flywheel with the access panel removed. With the little plastic cover on top/front of the transmission removed, you can see a little, but I doubt that much of the pressure plate can be seen. They must have used "feel" to determine the problem - "We feel it's a clutch problem."
Did you try to reset the self-adjusting clutch cable, or adjust the manually-adjustable clutch cable? Does it grind when shifting to first, or just not go in?. I had a similar problem where a local shop couldn't decide if the car had a bad throwout bearing or transmission. I suspect that they wanted to pull the transmission and tell me it was going to cost $4-k to fix, then offer to buy the car for $500 or so. I put in a used transmission for under $1-k with a 1 year warranty... Ron
