Thanks, bender. I just got back to this today and was able to see the alternator attachment with a mirror. I ended up putting the car on stands which wasn't strictly necessary but from underneath I could see the alternator and starter motor connections (although it was then easier to reach them from above) and it was easier to clip a couple of the cable ties.
Now that I have the new cables in the car won't turn over and seems to have low power available so I'm guessing that one or more of the attachment points doesn't have a good connection.
My symptoms:
1) starter clicks but doesn't turn the engine
2) panel lights work but are dim, the power antenna works but very slowly
3) jumper cables to a known good battery didn't help (negative jumper cable clipped to the engine block of the Saab)
Given those symptoms, any guesses where the problem is going to be?
I think that I will start with the ground points on the engine block and body, pulling the cable off and sanding lightly. Getting to the alternator and starter connections may be a bit more of a pain since the cable is stretched quite tightly and I may need to remove it completely again to get it off the attachment posts.
