new battery cables, engine won't turn over

I got back to changing my battery cables today. Thanks to bender for suggesting a mirror to see where the cable attaches to the alternator.
Now that I have everything reassembled the car won't start and has very low power available. I tried jumping it from a known good battery with no luck so I'm thinking that one or more of my cable connections is bad.
My symptoms:
1) starter clicks but doesn't turn the engine
2) panel lights work but are dim, the power antenna works but very slowly
3) jumper cables to a known good battery didn't help (negative jumper cable clipped to the engine block of the Saab)
4) when I first connected the negative battery terminal there was a slight spark but nothing since then as I have taken it on and off.
Given those symptoms, any guesses where the problem is going to be?
I roughed up the battery connection posts and the new clamps so I think that their connections are good (the new negative side clamp is a little small for the battery post so I ended up having to work it on and shave the post down a little in the process).
I think that I will start with the ground points on the engine block and body, pulling the cable off and sanding lightly. Getting to the alternator and starter connections may be a bit more of a pain since the cable is stretched quite tightly and I may need to remove it completely again to get it off the attachment posts.
