HELP: 900 SE T running hot...and don't know why!?!

Hi everyone, I hope you'll be able to help me out here...

I have a 97 900 SE Turbo with 117k miles. And it's running hot. The temp gauge is in the middle (9 o'clock) and most of the time even a tad above that.

My friend has the same car only from 95 also with all options and it NEVER comes up to the middle of the temp gauge, not even in stop-n-go city driving in warm weather. Usually it sits at a quarter of the temp gauge.

My fan does come on, but it only seems to come on if it is in danger of getting hotter then 'a tad above the middle'.

My mechanic acknowledged that it's running hot a suggested to replace the fan resistor with one from a 9000 Turbo which, I believe, gives the fan two speeds instead of one with original resistor. That's all sounds fine, but it does not explain why my car is running so hot and why it thinks that running 'a tad above the middle' is fine and normal.

The strange thing is that on a long constant drive at 65 miles/hour and a 65F (18C) degree outside temperature it always at the middle or 'a tad above the middle' on the gauge. Which is just not good! Even with a different resistor, that would mean that my fan would always be on and it still wouldn't matter, because if cool outside air at 65 miles/hour can't cool down the engine, the fan won't be able to do it as well.

Please shine your light on this problem, since I'm afraid my Saab will suffer a great deal from this permanent overheating, thanks a million!
