Don't discount the bad MAF idea so quickly:
I have personally driven with two bad ones, a 2000 base and a 2001 Viggen. The 2000 tested out fine at the dealer (3 times) and the mechanic even test drove the car a bunch and insisted I was nuts. A couple melted pistons a few weeks later and we knew who was right. They had to call Saab to finally get the info that they needed to test the MAF even further. It tested slightly out of spec but only when certain conditions were met. I drove the car for maybe 3 months with the bad MAF and it just blew the engine one day, out of the blue.
As for the 2001 Viggen, I replaced the MAF (out of warranty) after noticing my performance was taking a hit, especially during warm weather. I could detect slight pinging at certain times, but mostly the WOT performance of the car was somewhat irregular. Specifically, the boost was not as high or as steady as normal. However, at air temps around 50F, the car literally worked perfectly. Thinking back to my previous experience with a "bad" MAF and of course research here, I immediately ordered a new MAF and installed it ASAP. Viola, perfect operation at all temperatures and driving styles. I still keep the old MAF around because it still "works", kinda sorta... If I somehow break the wire by accident I'll have a spare to get me to work, I guess.
