SWEDECAR, thanks for the input. It appears that I will have to go back to the drawing board.
With the shifter linkage disconnected from the shifter shaft, I can move the shifter shaft by hand and feel three positions (shaft fully into transmission; shaft fully out of transmission; and a mid position, which I assume is neutral). Am I correct in my understanding of the gear engagement (facing transmission shifter shaft)?
1st Gear = rotate shaft counterclockwise and pull shaft fully out
2nd Gear = push shaft fully in from 1st gear position
3rd Gear = rotate shaft clockwise (slightly) in neutral position and pull shaft fully out
4th Gear = push shaft fully in from 3rd gear position
