That came on the later 9-3 model, not the NG900.
I'd look at the water pump to make sure it's not leaking. Likewise the tranny and engine from the bottom. If it's a turbo (and I assume so if you are in the USA and it's an SE), make sure it boosts to the edge of the red under full throttle (it will back off when you get moving faster). Check the exhaust for rust and leaks. If manual trans, check for worn syncros and ask about the clutch. Check the A/C. Ask if he's ever replaced the DI cassette. Check the headlight wiper motors. See if it vibrates on the highway from 55 to 75. Check to see if the brakes vibrate when stopping from high speed. Check to see if it vibrates when accelerating up a hill on the highway. Look underneath at the back sides of the wheels for obvious dents/out of round. Ask if the idler pulley and serpentine belt have been replaced.
I'd be a little concerned about the headgasket with the steaming issue. Ask him of it uses any coolant. Look in the overflow bottom for oil and on the dipstick for water (white foam). You could have a compression test done and have the cooling system pumped up to check for leaks.
Report back on any defects and we can comment on cost to resolve.
