Does it look like a really weak chocolate shake (light brown/tan), etc.
Steven's question about type of tranny is valid because the trans cooler has been known to leak into the coolant.
I think it is likely, based on your statement that it KEPT overheating (ie overheated multiple times), that you blew your head gasket at some point and engine oil and possibly combustion gases are now getting into your coolant. Multiple overheats, especially, will warp your head and possibly the block.
How long have you been running it like that? How does the oil in your crankcase look? If that's nice and creamy too, it's REALLY not good news as you may have damaged main bearings among other things.
If it looks ok, it MAY be either Stevens idea, or oil is getting into your coolant, but not the other way around. Don't let anyone tell you that a blown head gasket ALWAYS shows up as coolant in your oil. Many times it's the other way around depending on where the leak is. The combustion cylinders are under much greater pressure than the coolant passages, so if it's a small leak, the coolant can't create enough pressure to squeeze through, but the combustion artifacts can. There is also a test fluid that can check if combustion gases are in your coolant.
