Depends if the brakes are frozen onto the rotors. If not then it should be okay.
On my '96 I replaced the calipers and rotors myself. I put on cheap ones from Advanced Auto and it was much cheaper than taking it in. That was about 4 years ago. You can also get speed bleeders to bleed the lines yourself and really keep costs down. Though I have to admit, I broke a bolt holding the caliper on (lets just say I had elbow grease that day).
If you do take it in have them check the brake lines too. The people that owned the car before me lived on a mountain dirt road here in Vermont and a line failed.
But try beating them with a hammer if they don't release. You may, and probably should, put on new calipers any way. Probably would be the same price as to rebuild your current ones and would eliminate a return trip to pick up your car.
