Update on leaky convertible top...read on (kinda long)! Posted by turrbo [Email] (#8) [Profile/Gallery] (more from turrbo) on Thu, 3 Sep 2009 20:05:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A few weeks ago the 5th bow mechanism on my '01 convertible started making a scraping noise while raising and lowering. The next morning, I received a Soft Top Failure message, but could still lower the top by releasing the switch and then pressing it backwards again. I read a very good post here that it could be my 5th bow intermediate switch needing replacement. Lo and behold, it was the switch scraping against the 5th bow mechanism making the noise, and thus I decided that was my problem. While I was at it, I decided to check the fluid level, and noted that it was very low. Thinking I might have a dual problem, I brought the car to the dealer.
I posted a couple times earlier that the top leaked through the latches and rails when it rained (water would pool and leak upon movement), and that the soft top storage area would fill up with water. I also noticed that the top closed crooked, and the right side would smack the windshield header when closing, and the left side would not even touch the header. The latch was pretty loosey-goosey...I though it was supposed to be. In addition, my tonneau cover never really latched down completely tight...there was always a bit of play on the left side.
Anyway, picked up the car from the dealer today. The switch was in fact the soft top failure problem, not the low fluid (topped up and Lucas Hydraulic Oil Booster & Stop Leak added...more on that to come).
But, the cool part: they recalibrated my top (presumably with Tech 2?) and all of my problems have disappeared. It no longer closes crooked, it latches down tight as a drum (no more banging over bumps) and the soft top cover locks down properly. Not sure what the recalibration procedure is, but the total charge was about $350 including the part and labor to replace that.
Long story short: if you're having top issues, go to the dealer and get it recalibrated! No rain to test the leaks yet, but they assure me that that issue should be all gone.
