Your friend is right that some of the codes may go away.
If I were in your situation I would just drive the car for a while the way it is. The true problems most likely won't show their head until about 1000 miles of driving. Everything has to get good and hot and re-lubricated to tell the difference between a big problem and something that is going to go away.
In the mean time swap out all of the fluids (including transmission). I wold dump a can of "Sea Foam" in the gas tank and refill the whole tank with low grade gas. The reason I saw low grade is because low grade does not require alot of heat to combust as compared to high grade. If the old gas has turned into sludge then your car would have a hard burning it; the low grade fuel will help make it easier. Between the sea foam and the cheap gas you should be able to safely burn w/e is left in the tank.
Make sure you replace the fuel filter after you run a couple tanks thru.
