On mine I ended up using vice grips.
but since then I've learned of a flaring tool that is pretty cheap (if I remember right) for brake lines that you can get. That way you can cut it out completely, put the connector on and then flare it and you are good to go. It would save you the bloody knuckles that I'm sure I endured.
I had one line fail while in a construction zone so I certainly advise keeping an eye on them.
Also, a handy little item(s) are Speed Bleeders that you can buy and put on your calipers so you can do the bleed all by yourself and cheaply. I use them on my motorbike.
