I thought shims could be used in the rear, but people have disagreed with me about that. I didn't really have to worry about that, since mine didn't go out of alignment.
You can certainly have the rear alignment MEASURED. That might point out some bent parts or something.
Like Wayfarer said, flaky belts in the tire's construction can do real funny things too. I had a snow tire that began going out of balance real quickly, over & over. I put up with it to the end of winter. When I took the snows off, I saw a couple steel wires beginning to poke thru, so that was the end of those tires. There was never any visible squirming of the tire, even under load as I drove alongside & watched.
