Distributor sensor wiring

When checking the car (96 non-turbo) for coming winter, I found the wires from the distributor to the DIC were so overheated that the insulation was baked hard and dropping off.
I decided to replace the wires (at least the hardened area close to the engine). There is a 3 prong connector which is on this wire and plugs in to the side of the distributor.
Is there a way of taking out the old wires and installing new ones in this connector? I have looked at the connector and there does not seem to be an obvious way to pull out the wires.
Failing this , I could leave the old wires in and join the new wires to these old ones but these old ones are very fragile.
