I couldn't agree more. Keeping our SAABs for 20 years of their lives, is part of our long-term financial plan. (We bought them used at 9 years a piece).
Once our cars hit 10yrs, I did a major service; engine and tranny mounts, clutch, suspension struts/arms/links, new axle boots, differential seals, coolant hoses, rear brake lines, waterpump, powersteering pump and hoses, exhaust, wheel bearings, wazee pulleys and exhaust. Since the subframe has to come off for the clutch replacement, it's easier to do all of these jobs at the same time. These items were selected based upon the failure rates from other owners on this site. I used Dmitri's excellent site to do these jobs.
It cost us about about $3500 in parts per car. Add in new leather seat skins $1700 from saabstuff and for about $5500 a car we should be good for a another 10 years. Cheaper than monthly car payments and hardly any depreciation (since our '95 and 99) are only worth about $2000.
I might, should the need arise, repaint the cars. However, a cheap buffing machine, some mild abrasive, and good quality wax should suffice in the interim.
Of course, the maintenance takes about a full weekend to do it all, but then I know I won't be pulling the subframe off again for the remaining life of the car.
Wear items I want to purchase now before they disappear (based on the C900 failures); front brake calipers and window winding motors.
HTH.
