Cupping is usually caused by worn front end components. However, you can find plenty of mechanics who will tell you "these cars just seem to do that" and "some tires do it more than others". If you get on it a lot and loose traction pulling out through corners, that will give you odd wear. You could also have something a front end guy won't spot, like worn tripod bearings causing issues. I'd have the fornt end checked to make sure nothing is loose. Then I'd get the alignment done.

As for the stories you've heard about alignment: You're getting half truths. First, everyone who's anyone uses a computer now, including the dealer. The computer is not HOW the alignment is done, it's how it is MEASURED. With the computer measuring at all four wheels and supplying a direct comparison to spec's, the mechanic's accuracy goes way up and you get a better job.

The front end alignment on these cars is the same as about every other car in the world today. Very standard. The shims need to be used if the rear is out of alignment. The mechanic you spoke to is right that most alignment shops don't want to use the shims. If the rear is out, they will say "it can't be adjusted". Your response should be "yes it can, with GM J-body shims, please do it". If you paid for a four wheel alignment then it should be included... although they will argue that it isn't. If they do, ask them why they are selling you a "four wheel" alignment if they aren't doing it. Usually they get the point and do it. But, they legitimately may not know it can be shimmed - most non-Saab shops are surprised to hear that it can... so tell them about the j-body shims.

As for places to go: I like NTB. The reason is that they print out the measurements off the computer and hand them to you. You get to see if the car is right or wrong when they start and right/wrong when done. You also see if the rear is out, and if it is, see the paragraph above.
