In my experience, specifically the two times I've had my transmission out, I was not able to pull the CV shaft out of the intermediate shaft by hand; and simply removed the entire assembly. As you may know, the intermediate shaft and the CV shaft connect to each other *through* the carrier bearing. I know slide hammers are a tool that many people have, and I'm sure the job is possible to complete without a slide hammer, but I mentioned it as a tool to help complete the job with less frustration. FYI, slide hammers are available to borrow at most of the big chain parts stores that have the "used loaner tool" programs. However, I'm sure you could remove the entire assembly and bring it to whomever will press the bearing for you, and they'll be able to get it apart for a little more money.
