Neutral Safety Switch - REPLACEMENT DIFFICULTY

Car is a 2000 9-3 with a suspect NSS issue. Got a new one from Eeuroparts and proceeded with the job. Everything was going OK (other than the physical contortions and usual accompanying profanity)until I tried to pull the selector cable assembly out of the switch........after removing the nut on the driver's side of the switch, the cable wouldn't lift off. It was definitely locked in there. It wasn't a tight fit from being pressed in, but rather a definite feeling of pulling up against a metal-to-metal contact. What am I missing here?
I've read that the car's gear selector switch should be put in neutral when refitting everything (if I ever get to that point), but to that end, there seems to be another issue. With the battery out of the car, I tried to put the car in neutral by depressing the safety button adjacent to the gearshift......of course, it wouldn't move. Even after I reassembled everything and had it working normally, the gearshift wouldn't come out of PARK by manually depressing the override button
Any ideas on these issues???? Thanks,
Steve
