I called Bosch CO. after the spark plug failed and told them what happened. They told me that they will inspect the plug, and if they find it was materials or workmanship that caused the failure, they'll pay for the repair cost. I got a letter in the mail a couple days after the telephone call asking for some detailed information. I filled out a simple form with the vehicle info: vin, production year, model, mileage, etc. wrote an explanation of the problem, sent in copies of receipts for everything I bought to fix the problem and added 10 hours at the $35/hour I charge other people to do work on their cars. All-in-all I itemized $392.change to pull the head, clean out the cylinder, and put everything back together. Obviously, I realize Bosch could easily come back and claim it wasn't materials or workmanship that caused the spark plug to fail, but they would have to try pretty hard to explain how a plug does that at 15,000 miles. I haven't heard back from them yet, but it's only about a month and they said it would take 4-6 weeks for a response. Regardless, it's pretty surprising Bosch would do anything at all, most companies would simply claim no responsibility for damages incurred by failure of their parts.
