I bought a manually adjustable cable at O'Reilly (Checker) a while back. The cable fit properly, but broke after about 3,000 miles; I reinstalled the original cable and haven't had to look back since.

The OEM cable can be adjusted by hand, but it takes a little finesse; move the fuse/relay panel under the hood to the side to gain access to the cable adjustment spring assembly, with the parking brake on or the wheels chocked you can slip a long prybar between the release arm and the transmission mount bracket, release the pressure on the cable, and grab the spring near the firewall and pull out from the adjuster pod, slowly allow the release arm to load the cable again and take the car for a ride.

FYI, the original automatic adjusting mechanism wears out because the release bearing isn't sliding freely on it's sleeve and is putting too much strain on the cable. Eventually, the release bearing wears out because it doesn't slide back away from the pressure plate; the bearing isn't designed to spin constantly. When the cable let loose on my car the bearing only lasted another 1,000 miles. So, to answer your question about what else you might need in addition to the cable; you may need a release bearing, or more appropriately a clutch kit.
