I got a surprise tonight while chasing a weak boost problem in my '97 SET 5-spd. I thought I'd share this success with the group, but I'm also wondering if anyone else has experienced this result. Basically, with my foot to the floor in 2nd at about 3K RPM, I was getting lackluster boost - midway into the yellow, as I have since I bought this car in July. Then with no warning, the turbo suddenly spooled up and the needle went to the red! Scared the crap out of me! I let off the gas and took a breath.
Now, I previously owned an identical '97 and the boost was great, so I knew the boost in this car could be better. I had blown out the BPC with shop air, ran through a can of BG44K and changed the spark plugs but saw no improvement.
Tonight, I pulled the BPC again and sprayed the heck out of it with WD-40 - something I had not done the first time - and blew it out with air. The first couple of tries, I had the same lackluster boost, but after this sudden burst of power, things are now different.
Now it has the free and easy boost I was used to in the old car. It's like the BPC became 'unstuck' at that moment and began working properly again. I also notice that I hear the familiar turbo song now, where I didn't before. The needle goes just barely into the red and then dials back just a bit, just the way the other car did.
I hope this helps others who are chasing a low boost issue. I'd be interested to know if anyone else has experienced this sudden 'unsticking' behavior, and whether the foot-on-the-floor had anything to do with it, or if it just takes a few tries to get the BPC going again no matter what.
Thanks!
