Alas, the old '94 would not pass inspection. Floor board had a hole it in. I only have good things to say about the car - funny how when you work on them you tend to get attached. The car just made it to 250k. I had to get a car fast and did so within a day at Aero Motors. Matt was a delight to work with. The new car is a 2001 turbo. When I finally settled down with car and really took a look under the hood, I noticed the belt seemed a bit glazed. One cold morning I got a squealing noise that sounded like a tensioner or idler pulley. Decided to order new pulleys and a belt from eeuroparts. Put them on today.
On inspecting the old belt I noticed that the belt was cracked length wise about a quarter inch in from what would have been the outside edge from the engine. This prompted me to take another look at the new belt to see how it was aligned across all pulleys. I noticed the new belt was 1/4" off the new tensioner pully. I realigned the belt and started the car up - belt repositioned itself in the same position. The pulleys seem to be aligned. I didn't see a spacer when I took off the old tensioner pulley. The only thing I can figure is that I'm missing a spacer or the tensioner has some play at the pivot point which allows the pulley to tilt down. Unfortunetly, I didn't check for play when I had the tensioner off.
Any thoughts out there or first hand experience? I did notice that I'm leaking oil at the head gasket - is the first procedure just to try and tighten the heads bolts before taking off the head?
Thank you, oh and by the way, the squealing still occurs - not for long - on cold starts. I'm hoping this has something to do with the misaligned belt.
