Hi,

I took my 2002 93 to a local Saab dealer for alignment, tire rotation/balance. Saab was in fine shape when I dropped her off. Of course, they tried to sell me a bunch of overly priced maintenance items on the phone before I could pick it up, but we usually either do these things ourselves or take it to an independent Saab shop.

When I picked up the car, I immediately noticed a loud & obvious exhaust sound that wasn't there when I dropped off the car. I wouldn't even get into the car. Long story short: "of course" they didn't intentionally damage anything & wouldn't take responsibility for it being damaged while in their possession. They put it up on the lift & showed us - it seemed to be coming from the flexible piece in the middle of the exhaust pipe. They wanted $450 to replace these parts that were not damaged when the car was dropped off.

There is no recourse, I imagine, so we'll be paying hundreds of dollars for this repair out of our pocket. Just to make ourselves feel better, though, we thought to try to open up this flexible piece to see if we could ascertain any damage that seemed intentional.

My questions for the board are: do you think it's possible this piece could have been undetectably damaged with...say...an awl or something or accidentally bumped out of line by the technician or something? And, have you ever suspected that a dealer or independent garage has damaged your car while in their possession?
