The only Saab engine that I'm familiar with is the 2 liter turbo, I'm not even sure if the 2.3l has an EGR; it was just a brainstorm. However, if there is one, it would obviously be mounted between the intake and exhaust manifolds; I can't imagine this would be difficult to look for. If this was a possibility for that model the only warning that could have occurred would have been stalling at stops. EGR valves open under high load conditions to lower exhaust temps and keep oxides of nitrogen from forming, when they start to go bad they will sometimes get stuck open allowing exhaust gasses to choke out the engine. The SID will not give any indication to engine management issues, this system monitors simple maintenance items like lamps and washer fluid. For engine management and fuel system issues, you'll need to check the ECU for codes (look in my post history for detailed instructions) and check the fuel system pressure if you determine this may be the cause of your trouble. Again, I'm brainstorming and trying to provide you with ideas to help you diagnose your problem because it's impossible to diagnose the majority of issues without being in the presence of the vehicle. Items that could lead to the issue you've described: Mass Air Flow sensor (may or may not have one), coolant temperature sensor, or fuel filter. The best place to start is the fuel injection system; you need to determine if the engine is getting too much fuel, or not enough fuel.
