Without a limited limited slip differential your traction is limited to the amount of torque either front wheel is able to handle. This means as soon as either drive wheel loses traction the opposing wheel will maintain the torque that was delivered to it at the point traction was lost. With a limited slip differential, some of the wasted torque that is spent spinning a wheel is captured by a clutch mechanism and delivered to the opposing wheel. This means that without a limited slip differential, once traction is lost on the drive wheels the only way to regain traction is to alter the weight distribution or reduce the torque by letting up on the throttle. With a limited slip differential it is still possible to regain traction without altering the weight distribution or the the available torque.
