Fuel pump differences???

Okay, quick background - my 2001 9-3 is up to 122k miles and the fuel pump makes a distinct buzzing/whining sound during operation (which my previous 2001 did not, at approx. 60k miles). I've read that it's common for the pumps to fail upwards of 100k, so I felt like I was on borrowed time and decided to replace it before it stranded me.
Rather than struggle with trying to replace the insert within the fuel pump assembly, I bought a good low-miles pump assembly from a recycler - it came off a 2001 9-3 convertible with 60k miles.
After much struggling to drop the tank and undo the lock ring, I finally pulled the pump out, only to realize it wasn't exactly the same as my replacement! On the pickup at the bottom of the tank, the "original" has a round inlet with a fine mesh filter attached, while the "replacement" has a rectangular inlet with a coarse plastic screen inside of it.
So what's the difference? Both pumps have the same part number, and they're otherwise identical. I've found pictures of both styles online, but no correlation to model/year, and the round-inlet-with-mesh seems to be a lot more common. Is it worth trying to transplant that inlet onto the other one, or does the rectangular inlet work fine in its own right?
Thanks!!
