grinding/groaning sound during right turns

Hmmm.... have a nasty groaning/grinding sound when I turn the steering wheel to the right. This sound does not occur when driving backwards with the steering wheel turned to the right and never happens when turning left (forward or reverse).
Wheel bearings, brake pads, brake discs, ball joints, suspension busings and power steering pump check good. There are no signs of scrapping/grinding on the wheels, brake discs or drive shafts. There is no "clicking" of the CV joints even at full steering lock.
Raising the front of the car and turning the front wheels by hand does not reveal any unusual sounds.
Anybody had this problem? The only things I can think of are perhaps the inner tripod joint of the driveshaft (I THINK clicking is only caused by the outer CV joints but not sure). My other thought is a bearing in the automatic transmission housing although there are no strange sounds when driving straight ahead or turning to the left.
Other than those ideas I'm stumped! Anybody else?
