I'm not exactly clear on that hose's function, but you're correct that the boxy thing is the charcoal canister, and I did have to disconnect that hose from it when I replaced my fuel pump a few weekends ago. I believe the other end was on the tank itself, so that would suggest it's the hose that sucks vapors from the tank into the canister.

The instructions I was following here on this board mentioned that the poster had broken one of the tabs on his hose's connector, but I was able to avoid this by prying very carefully with a screwdriver. There are supposed to be two tabs on opposite sides of the connector that are angled inward to engage the barb/flange on the canister's fitting.

Is it possible one of your tabs got broken off, so that the hose stayed on at first but eventually worked its way loose? Based on how tightly mine was attached, I'd say if your tabs are intact then your mechanic definitely forgot to reconnect it.

Still, it's surprising you didn't get a check engine light and/or trouble code. My understanding was that these cars are supposed to be pretty sensitive to leaks in the EVAP system.
