SNOW CHAINS on 9-3 question

I have a 2001 Viggen 4-door and I am trying to set it up with snow traction for the upcoming California ski season. Chains are mandatory in ski areas in this state during most snowfalls, and studs are allowed to some degree.
I have both a set of 18" rims and the OEM 17" rims. I found out the hard way that with my 225-40-18 tires on aftermarket 18" rims (Volvo Pegasus) would not accommodate regular snow chains or even cables due to the lack of side clearance on the interior of the tire (and barely enough vertical clearance for that matter). Apparently, I am not the first to encounter such issues, so I am wondering if anyone has had any successful solutions to this?
One soluton I am considering, but have not found much feedback on, is using my OEM Viggen wheels with regular "all-season" 225/45/17 or 215/45/17 tires and slap on a pair of Spikes Spider chains in front:

Alternatively, I am considering picking up a set of 16" steel rims fitted with 205/55/16 studded snow tires, then using standard chains on the front...although in this case I would need some hub spacers of some sort too, no? And I've never driven with studded tires on a highway with no snow..perhaps not a great idea?
Any experiences/insights would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
