I recently knocked my rearmost heat shield loose while reinstalling the gas tank after a fuel pump replacement. The thin-gauge aluminum broke right where it was secured with a nut to a stud on the body. I had hoped to simply remove the nut and add a washer with a large enough outside diameter, but that nut was rusted solid. Despite applying PB Blaster and only using a small ratchet, I still managed to snap the stud off flush with the body, so there went that idea. I didn't really want to drill a new hole in the body or mess with trying to extract the broken stud.
After about a week of listening to the annoying rattle at idle, I made a new mounting bracket from aluminum strip stock that mounts to the bolt on the nearby gas tank strap with a pair of hex nuts. It has a 90-degree bend and secures the heat shield with a short M8 bolt (so that all the nuts are 13mm heads).
You can see in the upper left corner of this picture where the shield and stud broke. You might have better luck than me, but like I said, be prepared!
