It will help if you remove the glove box and kick panel because you will likely have to reconnect the directional control rod between the panel and heater box. Having the kick panel off makes this a whole lot easier. The glove box has five (maybe six) screws and one bolt that hold it in place. Two by the car door, and three (or four) under the glove compartment door. The bolt is attached to the sidewall near the passengers feet. One screw holds the kick panel in place, but you have to push the panel towards the firewall to get over tabs near the gear shifter. The panel itself should be pulled (or pushed from behind) to remove it from the dash to give access to the fan speed switch. If I recall correctly the speed switch twists in/out from the back (no screws).
I'm pretty confident that your switch was bad and you made the correct decision to replace that first. Good luck!
