I consider myself a very experienced DIYer. Numerous suspension rebuilds, timing belts, clutches, even internal engine repair. Lots of electrical troubleshooting.
I think replacing the cabin filter is one of the most frustrating and least rewarding jobs on the NG900/OG9-3. It is easy to screw up and takes an unbelievable amount of time. Something that takes minutes on other cars and is very easy, mind you.
I would recommend you do not do it in cold weather, too. You will need to remove and reinstall several delicate and brittle plastic parts that are very difficult to maneuver into place. You will need to carefully pry up rubber gaskets that may be cut easily in the cold. If you do decide to do it yourself, wait until it is warm and give yourself plenty of time -- at least 40 minutes to 1 hour.
Recharging the R143a is a no-brainer, though. Just buy a hose (look for good quality brass fittings instead of plastic). I bought an excellent quality American made hose at WalMart for a few bucks. Buy a can of R134a (as plain as possible, no dyes, no oil, no stop leak) and shoot the whole can into the system. If the pressure is too low, you may have to wait a few minutes for the compressor to kick in. If you fill it for 10-15 minutes and the compressor does not seem to be working, you can just jump it with a wire. Just use your head and think before doing anything and you will be fine. In my experience, you don't need a pressure gauge to do this. A single can of R134a is usually OK to refill a discharged system. The refill process takes about 1/2 hour. Obviously don't do it in the cold.
