You may have a very slight leak in your exhaust, likely at one of the clamps that joins the sections. I replaced a rotted-out rear muffler and thought I had no other leaks, but the exhaust did still make a sputtering sound whenever I shut the engine off. Pressing a rag against the tailpipe didn't reveal any obvious leaks, though.
Then one day on my way to work, the front-most exhaust clamp (where the catalytic converter joins the middle flex pipe) suddenly came loose and my exhaust got REALLY loud. I picked up a new clamp at Autopart International on my way home, by which point the old clamp had totally disappeared, leaving the flex pipe dangling down. I put everything back together with tailpipe sealer and guess what...no more sputtering sound!
I suggest you check the condition of your clamps, and if they're significantly rusted it might be worth the $25 for all new ones. Buy OEM/Bosal rather than ScanTech, unless you want to fumble with a wrench to hold the nuts while you bolt them on! Also, Permatex Muffler & Tailpipe Sealer has worked well for me to seal the pipes together.
