My two cents...
While I love the turbo, I'd save the cash and look for a base model. Especially, if it is for less than a year while someone is in the states. Look for a car that runs good, mechanic approved, and that way she won't waste time waiting for repairs. Should be able to find a decent S for $1000 to $1500 and be able to sell it for similar.
If she is staying longer then I might suggest finding something to fix up, but it is hard to get the value out of repairs if it is only kept a short time. Especially, if a mechanic has to do it.
