1994 900s 2.3L NA coupe with 151K
At about 149k this summer, I first began to notice a light ticking noise coming from the engine on cold start: the frequency matched engine RPMs. Sometimes it was louder, but often the engine could be turned off and restarted immediately and the noise would be gone (or at least way quieter than the belt/pulley whirr).
This pattern has been consistent for 7-8 months now, but the restarting trick no longer makes it inaudible. The sound is much louder now in cold weather...started this morning (18 deg. F) and it was knocking pretty bad. Still, after 5 minutes of idle, the sound level had gradually faded to a light tapping and remained consistent. There have been no performance issues.
Started to idle now after 5hr cooldown (20 deg. F) and medium tapping lasted 5 seconds, then abruptly quieted (like odd Voodoo!).
I have never had a check engine light on. De-sludged at 105K and went to full synth. I've been putting off 150K timing chain service, but there has been no chain grooving in the valve cover yet. Recent filter and oil change have had no impact on knock. What is knocking? Is this a slow death rod bearing (lasting 2K mi.), a loose cap nut, one bad lifter, or is it something else? Anyone with similar experience?
