I think this is going to turn out to be your oil pump. Sound may seem to be coming from the top end but it could be reflecting off various surfaces and tricking you into thinking it's the top end.

These engines unfortunately have a sad history of sludge- and/or chain-drive-induced oil pump destruction. A bit of metal or carbon gets sucked through the oil pump and it scores the timing cover on its way through. This results in loss of oil pressure and eventual engine destruction. That bit of grit, still clinging to the oil pump gears as it continues its destruction of the timing cover, is (I think) the noise you're hearing.

Only cure in such circumstances is to replace the oil pump and timing cover, which is a daunting task because you must remove the head to remove the timing cover. Despite accounts to the contrary I've never been able to remove the timing cover without damaging the head gasket.

This particular situation happened to me in the spring, at which point I elected to abandon further work on that car, and I've sworn off any Saabs after 9000s because of the relatively high likelihood of this phenomenon happening to them.

Certainly look under the timing cover. I fear anything making that noise is going to be bad news. One possible hope is that the upper chain guide, mounted to the underside of the timing cover, needs replacement, which is cheap and simple. But anything else smacks of gritty metal-destroying action.

I hope I am wrong!
