The low gear torque limiting is a function of the boost control in both manual and automatic models, this is different than the torque loss associated with automatic transmissions. The next post explains the power curve and torque loss rather perfectly, so I won't bother to touch on that. However, I would like to mention that with the performance tune, this is quite pronounced and I suffer a massive power loss above 5500rpm; the only reason I ever rev out to my (programmed) 7200rpm redline is to get myself a little higher in the band on my next gear. The torque limiting function simply limits the maximum boost pressure by a few psi in first and second gear to reduce wheel spin/hop, torque steer, and promote transmission longevity.
