Rattling suspension / front end

This is an FYI post. I changed my strut inserts about 9 months ago, along with strut mounts and bearings. Recently I started having a rattling/clunking noise at irregularities in the road surface. I didn't see any completely worn out bushings, ball joints seemed fine, strut mounts still OK, motor mounts OK. Anyway, I "whipped" out my strut assembly and before taking it apart on the work bench I slipped pipe wrenches between the spring coils and found out the strut nut was loose about 4 turns. (I remember almost giving up on loosening the nut when I replaced the inserts but managed to get it off.) Anyway I tightened it back up (torque spec: as hard as I freeking could :), reinstalled, and the noise is gone.
So the moral of the story is: if you have rattling not too long after dismantling the strut assembly you may have loose strut nuts!
