Hi all. I've been lurking for some time and wanted to thank you all for the valuable information. I will gladly support the board with my membership as soon as I pay off my mechanics.
Not long ago I helped my daughter purchase a '01 93 SE Turbo w/150+K. After doing a lot of reading about cold weather starts and new purchases of older, previously loved Saabs I've decided it's about time to share my experiences.
We didn't pay a lot for the car but have put a lot into it as we knew it needed work. We're praying for the work to cease now before it goes from previously loved to money pit. I'm thankful for the encouragement of all the good mechanics who've contributed insisting that it is a good car. I love the car but it pulls a "Christine" everytime my daughter takes it back.
-Turns out that in our case the "cold start" issue was not related to the cold but it was a fuel pump.
-coolant leak = water pump.
-oil leak = hoping head bolt retorque slows or stops.
-brake booster
-brakes (pads and rotors) all round
-new treads all round with alignment
-AC compressor and new belt
-replace cd player busted
-150K major and assessment directly after purchase by a dealer so most of this wasn't a surprise (AC compressor/fuel pump ouch)
-transmission mount
-exhaust bandaid
-SID pixel repair
-door seal
-floor mats
-$$$$ more in the car than paid for the car. Hope it was worth it.
Oddly enough, I enjoy the car so much that I'd do it again but next time I'll know what other things to check for. The alternator and starter checked good during start trouble so what the heck else could go wrong (knocking on wood).
